Techniques in Glycobiology (340.710):

Course Description:

Glycobiology, the discipline in which the structure, biosynthesis, and function of glycans is explored is rapidly emerging as the next growth area in biomedicine. Glycans, as saccharides, polysaccharides, glycolipids, glycosaminoglycans/proteoglycans, and glycoproteins, play fundamental roles in all organisms. In mammalian models, glycans have emerged as novel biomarkers of disease, regulators of signal transduction, are crucial for the development of novel vaccines and therapeutics, are essential for glycoprotein quality and control, are central to host-pathogen interactions, and play roles in the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This course will provide students with a comprehensive training in the analysis of glycoconjugates, and where possible samples from disease models will be analyzed. 

This course involves a technical lecture in the morning, laboratory work during the day, and seminars in the evening.  Prerequisites: Students/fellows without a background in Glycobiology are encouraged to enroll in either "Introduction to Glycobiology" or “Fundamentals Glycobiology”. This is a 4 credit course, that takes 2 full weeks.
